| Castaway Cay- Cabanas view |
Welcome back! You’ve successfully navigated through the first part of our Disney Cruise Line adventure, but the journey is far from over. Prepare for Part Two and thank you for joining us on this magical ride!
Let’s dive right in. Day 2 of our cruise kicked off with breakfast at Cabanas, Disney Cruise Line’s buffet. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, but it was quite crowded, making it a bit of a challenge to find a comfortable spot to sit down. Arriving around 8 AM, we quickly noted this for our future trips, but luckily, we eventually found a cozy table amidst the crowd.
Cabanas isn’t exactly a high-end dining experience; instead, it features an assortment of traditional breakfast fare—fluffy scrambled eggs, golden waffles, crispy toast, and a selection of fresh fruits. While the offerings were simple, each bite was satisfying and just what we needed to fuel our day. Here’s an exciting tidbit worth mentioning: Disney Cruise Line offers complimentary room service! Yes, you read that right—it’s included in your cruise package. This could be a fantastic option for anyone wishing to skip the bustling buffet in the morning. We didn’t take advantage of this service (a missed opportunity, I must say), but I discovered that you could order food anytime throughout the day and night, including Mickey Ice Cream bars for a late-night treat!
After breakfast, we grabbed our tumblers to fill with fresh coffee and included soda. PRO TIP! Our Travel Agent recommended bringing our own tumblers, as the complimentary soda, coffee and water served on the cruise typically come in mini cups. This turned out to be invaluable, as we frequently filled our tumblers with refreshing drinks to kickstart our day—especially before heading to the private island!
Just like many cruise lines, Disney Cruise Line boasts its own picturesque private island. On the second day of our cruise, we eagerly docked at Castaway Cay (pronounced “key”). We disembarked from the ship and enjoyed a leisurely stroll to the island’s main area. The path was beautifully adorned for the Christmas season, adding a festive spirit to our adventure! Along the way, we encountered beloved characters, all dressed in their tropical outfits, which added an extra sprinkle of joy to our morning.
To kick off our day at Castaway Cay, we had pre-booked double sea kayaks. This excursion didn’t take us into the deep blue ocean but instead invited us to paddle through a designated, tranquil area perfect for exploration. The experience was a blast, and we snapped some fantastic photos of our cruise ship from a unique and captivating perspective!
Once we finished our kayaking adventure, we signed out bikes to traverse the island. After a quick check-in, we picked out our bikes and set off. Castaway Cay features well-maintained, flat, and paved bike paths that made our ride effortless and enjoyable. These paths led us all over the island, including a climb to a scenic tower that offered breathtaking vistas of our ship from a distance. Though the bikes were technically available for just one hour, a cast member assured us, “It’s island time, whenever…”—so we took advantage of the laid-back vibe and kept them longer than an hour (please don’t judge us!). Our day on Castaway Cay was shaping up to be an idyllic escape filled with sunshine, adventure, and a touch of Disney magic!
We took our bikes to the adults-only section of the island, known as Serenity Bay, and let me tell you, it truly embodied its name! This dedicated area was completely separated from the bustling kids' section and spanned a vast expanse, offering a perfect oasis of tranquility. We stumbled upon a secluded spot where we were completely alone, and it felt like paradise! The soft sound of waves lapping against the shore created a symphony of relaxation around us.
To my surprise, the food was genuinely delicious for a buffet! We had an enticing selection: chicken, juicy burgers, and even tender ribs and steak. While it may not have been five-star dining, it certainly exceeded my expectations for buffet fare! It even included ice cream, which I had to partake in.
After soaking in every moment at Serenity Bay, we reluctantly hopped back on our bikes to return to the ship. On our way back, we indulged in a bit of shopping on the island. A pro tip: the shops here carry some truly unique and creatively designed Disney merchandise that you won't find anywhere else!
Once we returned to the ship, we took a moment to unwind and get ready for the excitement of Pirate Night! That’s right—an entire night dedicated to PIRATES! Every Disney Cruise Line itinerary features this thrilling evening, packed with pirate-themed shows (often centered around Jack Sparrow from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films) and lots of guests dressed to fit the theme. We were even gifted adorable pirate bandanas adorned with charming Mickey pirate emblems!
Our dinner that evening was at Animator's Palette, the same restaurant where we enjoyed lunch on embarkation day. While I appreciated the imaginative theming of this restaurant, I found it to be my least favorite dining experience throughout the trip. The atmosphere was quite noisy and overwhelming, and unfortunately, the steak I ordered was overcooked and chewier than I had hoped. But such is life!
After dinner, Matt made his way to the pub to catch the Packer game, while I decided to head up to Deck 11 to enjoy the second Pirate show and the fireworks display. As I strolled along, I had a surprise encounter with none other than the fabulous Minnie Mouse! It was a serendipitous moment—just the two of us as we bumped into each other. She approached me with open arms, enveloping me in the warmest hug! It took me by surprise, and although there was no one around at first to capture the moment, I managed to snap a selfie with her, and she looked just perfect!
To my amazement, the fireworks show was not the brief spectacle I expected; instead, it lasted a breathtaking 20 minutes! Who knew fireworks could be so spectacular when launched from a cruise ship sailing through the vast ocean? Each explosion illuminated the night sky, synchronized beautifully to a medley of iconic Disney music. However, the pirate show itself was somewhat underwhelming. The actor portraying Jack Sparrow missed the mark, struggling to emulate Johnny Depp's distinctive style. I could hardly grasp what he was saying, which detracted from the overall experience.
That wraps up Part two of my adventures. Be sure to follow along with my blog for Part three, coming soon! There’s so much more to share—and even more fun waiting to be had!
